Numb: The True Story chapter 3I was woken by gentle shaking on my shoulder. "Too early, Momma..." I muttered, swatting at her and yawning.
I cracked open my eyes. Cadence stared back at me, her cheeks puffed up in anger.
"......Ohio..." I whispered, grinning.
"Yeah yeah, ohio gozaimasu to you too Mimi. Don't you need to call your other dad? Or your...well, don't you need to call someone from your foster family?"
Rubbing my eyes, Cadence's avoidance of the word "mom" caught my attention. "Uh..what time is it?" I asked, deciding that it'd be best not to ask her about it if it was early in the morning.
"It's almost 9 in the morning."
...."Fine. Where's a phone?" I crawled out of the boxroom, standing and stretching out my back. "Does Dad have one?"
I hesitated a little before saying Dad... I realized. Well this IS freaking me out a little, if I think about it...maybe I'm not terribly freaked because I blew up yesterday at everyone here...

Numb chapter 34I felt terrified. Terrified and hopeless.
According to what I'd heard, the poison in Samuel's body kept adapting to every antidote they came up with. Some "Iron Ghosts" of Daniele's had been sent off to do something, most likely just for Daniele's own gain. I doubted he even cared if Samy lived or died.
I had been holding back tears for hours, praying desperately for Samy to be alright, for them to find an antidote that would cure him. Ami had started comforting me at first, but I lashed out at her every time and eventually she had left me alone.
What was wrost, though, was that Daniele was in this waiting room with me.
WAITING ROOM. I'd had to contain all my rage so I wouldn't murder the doctors for keeping me away from Samuel. I'd been sitting here for hours....with Daniele.
Daniele. Who, on top of everything else, knew things about my mother.
It was literally taking all I had not to attack that-
